Best Malabar Snacks. Bombay Hotel Kozhikode. Calicut Bombay Hotel, Kozhikode Street Food, Moplah Snacks At Bombay Hotel Calicut. Elanchi. Unakaya. Mutton Cutlet. Biryani Chai. Chemmeen Cake.
A landmark on Silk Street, Kozhikode, Bombay Hotel has stood the test of time for 70 years and is still going strong, dishing out over 20 varieties of Moplah snacks come tea time every day!
The spot to savour some Malabari snack classics and this is exactly what Food Lovers’ Editor, Kripal Amanna does in this episode of Gourmet On The Road. He treats himself to the elanchi (thin crepes stuffed with a mix of bananas, coconut, sugar and raisins), a custardy savoury chemmeen or prawn cake, a biryani chai and much more!
BIRYANI CHAI
A fancy name for this gimmicky tea poured skilfully into a glass such that the milk and tea liquor hold their own in a dancing swirl! Fancy name aside, and there are no biryani spices in this, the tea makes for a punchy companion to the loaded desserts and savouries here.

CHICKEN PUFF
Not so pleasing to the eye, the chicken puff is flavourful. A deep-fried maida puff stuffed with chicken, onions green chillies and turmeric, this snack makes for a delicious accompaniment to some hot chai!

MUTTON CUTLET
A filling cutlet of meat and onions flavoured with ginger. I was expecting a more meaty flavour, but you taste mostly the onions and some flour that’s gone in as a binder in this snack.

ERACHI PATHIRI
This stuffed pathiri is generous on the onions, but a trifle sparing on the meat, which in itself has a bit of a bite. Prepare to spend some time chewing on this.

CHEMEEN CAKE
a cake with a difference, this savoury steamed cake comprises of spiced shrimp sandwiched between layers of the soft cake. On the palate, I detect a hint of sweetness which contrasts with the mildly spicy shrimp. You can definitely taste the shrimp flavour in this!

ELANCHI
A moist wobbly pancake that’s stuffed with ripe banana, fresh coconut, sugar and nuts. The tart sweetness of the banana combined with the juicy bite of the coconut is endearing, clearly a dessert that’s a must-try here.

MUTTAPOLA
They love eggs in desserts at Bombay Hotel, and this egg white and ripe banana steamed cake is a taste to be acquired.

SP UNNAKAYA
A sticky maida fritter with a coconut, banana and egg filling. I was bracing to taste some ‘egginess’, but thankfully you don’t. One tastes the sweet tartness of the banana and the flavour of the coconut. Certainly a snack that grows on you.

8.5/10
ELADA
A gooey steamed rice cake stuffed with coconut, banana, some lentils and jaggery, best eaten with a spoon. The rice casing is slightly mushy in texture, but the hero of this treat is certainly the banana.

LEMON TEA
the lemon tea helps reset your palate and appetite if you want to dive back into some of the delicacies at bombay hotel.

Elanchi??
Ellanchi……❤?
Hello Kripal Anna…Unnakkai is made with not maida it is made with Nenthrakai, Inside the slightly boiled big banana paste dough basically filled with coconut, cardomom, sugar etc.And egg is not a regular ingredient in it.Some people smear egg on top of it while frying. And the name “Unnakkai” means “Cotton seed shell”. And the shape of unnakkai is exactly like the cotton seed shell. And it is very sad that hotel people are not explaining the things properly.
Honestly I love his bald shiny head more than the food lol
