Mittayi Theruvu or SM(Sweet Meat) Street as it is called from the time of Zomorin the Ruler who allowed Gujarati sweet meat makers to set up their shops in that area. Mittayi Theruvu(Sweet street) is located at the heart of Calicut. People come here mainly to buy Kozhikkodan Halwa, a speciality of Kozhikode. Anyone who visits Kozhikode should come back with Kozhikodan halwa. The rule we used to follow during college and office days. So do we. We are here mainly to buy it.

You can see shops that includes sweets, halwas, textiles, electronic gadgets and home utensils etc just like Chalai from Trivandrum fols, even though Chalai does not sell halwa in whole sale rates. Vehicles are not allowed after 10 am to avoid heavy traffic congestions. Even though we took our car through the street at around 9.30, we felt like it would be a wise idea to park the car outside to prevent any unforeseen issues. The place gets really crowded in the evenings with people bumping into each other while walking. So we preferred 10 am time for the visit.

From sweets to spices, clothes to electronics, or hand looms to textiles the shops at SM street offers everything which caters to your needs. Local handicrafts namely carvings made out of rosewood and buffalo horns, coir products such as floor mats, doormats, brushes, mattresses, and the snake boat toys, are the most popular ones.

This video is about mittayi theruvu and our experience buying halwa there. We are not endorsing/promoting any shop or vendor. We liked the experience of shopping from there and liked the taste too. It might be different for others. That is why I mentioned to go there directly, taste the halwa and enquire about their rates.
